Pathum Thani

The province is located north of Bangkok with some parts of Pathum Thani bounded to Bangkok.  The province is divided into 7 districts and has over 500 villages.  The districts are Mueang Pathum Thani, Khlong Luang, Thanyabur, Nong Suea, Lat Lum Kaeo, Lam Luk Ka and Sam Khok. The former name of Pathum Thani is Sam Khok town, it was a residential area for Mon families in Martaban town who migrated from Myanmar during the war.  Under the reign of Rama II the Mons often visited and presented lotuses to the king, in return the king gave a new name for the province Pathum Thani which means the city of lotus.

Pathum Thani has the Chao Phraya River running through it, this makes the province one of the main areas for rice paddy.  Pathum Thani has a lot of attractions for visitors such as the City Pillar Shrine, beautiful temples like Wat Chinwararam which has the mural paintings telling of the Lord Buddha’s previous lives.  Wat Sing and Wat Chedi Thong both reflect the history of Mons life style.  The other temples you should visit are Wat Phut Udom, Wat Bua Khwan, Wat Chedi Hoi, Wat Worani Thammakayaram and Wat Phailom.  Apart from the temples the main attraction for tourists is Dream World, this is a major amusement park in Thailand which is not far from Don Muang airport.
